About Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu Contents 1) What sets us apart? 2) Philosophy 3) Skills learned. 1) What sets us apart? Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu visitors will notice: * a strict adherance to traditional Japanese martial arts ettiquette (see article on Reishiki), * a flurry of hands and feet during warm up exercises, * a calm atmosphere during our traditional waza practice, Principles vs. Technique: "Waza" are ancient techniques that illustrate a principle (Gensuoku) and are not, as in many arts, strictly relied on for use (see some examples on our student page). You must look into the waza to discover their secret underlying meanings. Applications: Hakko Denshin Ryu is unique in its focus on using our ancient principles for street applicable defenses - "Tekiyo" (see Modern Application page). Law Enforcement, security forces and civilians benefit alike. Relaxed, Friendly Atmosphere: People learn better when they are relaxed and at ease. If people are stifled or in fear, they don't learn as well or as fast.
Light Stretching: If you must stretch extensively to perform your martial movements, then you are in trouble the day that you don't stretch. Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu doesn't require extensive stretching and warm-ups. We may still enjoy stretching for the long-term good it does our bodies, but it is not necessary for our external defense system.

2) Philosophy of Hakko Denshin Ryu "Idomasu, Sakarawazu, Kizu Tsukezaru." No Challenge, No Resistance, No Injury. * No Challenge means that we don't go around bragging of our accomplishments, pick fights or escalate confrontations. * No Resistance means that we don't resist the attempts of our attackers to push or pull, or free ourselves from an attackers grasp, rather we go with their movements, relaxed and in mental control in order to best determine how to win easily. * No Injury means that we don't injure our opponents beyond what is necessary to subdue them and to stop their destructive course of action. These three tenants help modern day practitioners be able to use their art for the protection of their family, friends, and self while providing legal self-defense. Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu was created with the idea that it may have to be used. I call Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu - "user friendly," since legal and moral issues have already been resolved in its philosophy, without compromising effectiveness.
